Honoring the Spirit of Independence Among Zomi at Home and in the Diaspora

A History Etched in Struggle and Faith

The story of the Zomi is not one of passive waiting, but of resilient faith and generational courage. Despite centuries of marginalization and attempts at domination, the Zomi people continue to rise with purpose, protected by the enduring truth:

We are one people, with one homeland, and one destiny under God.

The Zogam Charter, born from the 2019 Zomi International Conference in Kuala Lumpur, and officially adopted in 2021, is our modern-day Declaration of Independence. It proclaims:

“Zomi refers to the indigenous inhabitants of Zogam, who by virtue of birth and blood, are one as people, being rightful owners of the land and resources.”

It affirms the sacred right of the Zomi to self-determination, cultural dignity, and political autonomy, both within their ancestral lands and as global citizens.

ZPCC: Guardian of the Zomi Vision

In the wake of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, which plunged the nation into lawlessness, the Zomi Political Coordination Council (ZPCC) emerged as the legitimate voice of the Zomi people. Empowered by the Zogam Charter, the ZPCC assumed the mantle of interim leadership, overseeing vital departments such as General Administration, Legislative Affairs, Judiciary Affairs, Religious Affairs, Federal Affairs, Defense, Finance, Homeland Security, Public Relations, Women’s Affairs, Information and Media, Education and Development, Secretariats and ZNV Corps.

Each appointment—whether in Myanmar, India, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand, Korea, or Canada—is more than administrative. It is a symbol of the transnational unity of Zomi, a proof that freedom knows no boundary and that the Zomi nation lives and breathes through its people, wherever they may be.

The Diaspora: Carriers of the Flame

From church halls in Oklahoma to youth centers in Seoul, from academic institutions in Europe to online forums in Australia, the Zomi in the diaspora are not merely observers of the homeland’s struggle—they are active builders of the Zomi future. They send aid, raise awareness, advocate for justice, and teach the younger generations to never forget where they came from.

In doing so, they embody what the Charter declares:

“ZPCC shall rely on the consent of all Zomi groups worldwide, including civil society organizations, institutions, political parties, and churches.”

Wherever a Zomi stands in dignity and solidarity, Zogam lives.

A United Declaration of Hope

As the world celebrates freedom, the Zomi people declare their own commitment to it—not only for themselves but as a beacon to oppressed peoples everywhere.

We declare:

  • That Zogam shall be governed by the will of its people.
  • That Zomi culture, faith, and language shall flourish without fear.
  • That Zomi identity shall not be erased or renamed.
  • That Zomi liberty shall not be denied—neither by force nor by silence.

We call upon the global community to hear our cry. We ask our friends and allies across nations to support the right of the Zomi to live free and whole in their land.
And to our fellow Zomi around the world, we say: Your voice matters. Your heart matters. You are Zogam’s beating pulse.

Freedom Is Our Future

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim liberty to the captives.” – Luke 4:18

From the hills of Zogam to the homes of Zomi in exile, Independence is not merely a date—it is a destiny.
The Zomi people’s journey of liberty is still unfolding. But with unity, divine guidance, and undying hope, the Zomi flag shall fly over a free Zogam—and Zomi sons and daughters around the world shall call her blessed.
